Heat Pump Repair

Heat Pump & Mini-Split Repair: Common Problems

Some of what looks like a problem is normal heat pump behavior. We measure charge, airflow and defrost to tell the difference.

  • Heat pump blowing cool air

A heat pump’s warm air feels milder than a furnace’s, so some of this is normal. Truly cold air can mean low refrigerant, a stuck reversing valve or a defrost problem.

  • Ice or frost on the outdoor unit

Light frost in cold, damp weather is normal, and the unit runs a defrost cycle to clear it. Solid ice, or a unit that never defrosts, needs a look.

  • Auxiliary heat running often

Backup heat strips are meant for the coldest days. If aux heat comes on a lot, the heat pump may be low on charge, mis-sized or set up wrong, and your power bill will show it.

  • Running constantly or can’t keep up

Usually a low charge, leaky or undersized ducts, or a system that’s the wrong size for the home. All of these can be measured.

  • Mini-split not cooling or heating

Dirty filters and coils, refrigerant leaks and drainage problems are common causes. Mini-split repair guide.

  • Strange noises or a burning smell

Grinding, rattling or a burning smell is a reason to turn the system off and call.

Replacement & Maintenance

Heat Pump Replacement and Maintenance

Replacement

When to consider a new heat pump

  • A major part fails on an older system.
  • Repairs keep coming back.
  • The system uses R-22 refrigerant, which is no longer manufactured.
  • It still can’t keep up after repairs.

We size the new system to your home and help you find available rebates. Heat pump replacement and Georgia rebates

Maintenance

Keep it running well year-round

A heat pump heats and cools, so it works all year and benefits from two tune-ups: cooling checks in spring, and heating, defrost and auxiliary heat checks in fall. Mini-splits also need their filters and coils kept clean. In Murray County, see our heat pump maintenance and repair for Chatsworth homes.

FAQ

Heat Pumps & Mini-Splits Questions

How much does it cost to install a heat pump in Georgia?

Heat pump installation costs in Calhoun and NW Georgia typically range based on system size, brand, and whether ductwork modifications are needed. We provide free in-home estimates and can often find rebates that offset costs. Call (706) 629-0749.

Are heat pumps worth it in Georgia winters?

Yes — modern heat pumps work efficiently even in Georgia's climate. Combined with proper insulation and air sealing (our whole-home approach), they deliver excellent comfort and lower energy bills year-round.

What is the difference between a heat pump and a mini split?

A central heat pump uses existing ductwork. A mini split (ductless) system installs indoor units in specific rooms with no ducts required — ideal for additions, older homes, or zoning control.

When is a ductless mini-split a good fit?

A ductless mini-split can serve an addition, bonus room, older home without practical ducts, or a zone with a distinct comfort schedule. Selection still requires load sizing, placement, condensate planning, and an outdoor design-temperature check. It is not automatically the best answer for every whole home or every existing duct system.

Do you offer rebates or incentives for heat pump installation?

We help customers take advantage of current federal, state, and utility rebates for high-efficiency heat pumps. Our BPI certification helps your project document what those programs ask for.

Can a mini split replace my existing furnace?

In many cases yes, especially with good insulation. We evaluate your whole home's energy performance first — that's the Anderson difference. We don't just swap equipment; we fix the house.

Why is my heat pump blowing cool air?

A heat pump's warm air is naturally cooler than a furnace's, and it blows cool air for a few minutes during a normal defrost cycle. Truly cold air for long stretches usually means a low charge, a stuck reversing valve, a defrost problem or auxiliary heat not engaging. We measure pressures and temperatures to find out which.

Is frost on my heat pump normal?

Light frost on the outdoor coil in cold, damp weather is normal. The unit runs a defrost cycle to melt it, and you may see steam. A unit encased in solid ice, or one that never defrosts, has a problem worth checking.

Should I choose a heat pump or a furnace in North Georgia?

It depends on your home, your fuel options and your ductwork. North Georgia winters are within a properly sized heat pump's range, and some homes pair a heat pump with a gas furnace for the coldest days. We look at the whole house before recommending either.
