The Short Answer

Anderson Heating, Air & Insulation repairs, replaces and installs thermostats from our Calhoun shop and Rome office, for homes across Northwest Georgia, from standard and programmable models to smart Wi-Fi thermostats. A thermostat is the switch that tells your heating and cooling when to run, so a bad one can look like a broken furnace or AC. We test the thermostat, its wiring and the system together, then give you a firm price before any work begins. Our trucks carry common thermostats, so most replacements happen on the first visit. Family-owned since 1978.

Signs of a Thermostat Problem

Is It the Thermostat? Start With What You’re Seeing

Match the symptom to the usual cause. We’ll confirm on site before any work begins.

  • Blank or dead screen

Often dead batteries, a tripped breaker or a wiring fault. A safety switch on the system can also cut power to the thermostat.

  • Heat or AC won’t turn on

The thermostat may not be sending the call, or the system isn’t answering it. Testing tells us which.

  • Temperature reads wrong

A failing sensor, or a thermostat in direct sun, near a supply vent or on a drafty wall, reads a temperature the rest of the house doesn’t feel.

  • Short cycling

A system that turns on and off every few minutes can be a thermostat setting or wiring issue, or a problem with the equipment itself.

  • Settings or schedule won’t hold

Older programmable thermostats lose settings as they fail. Smart thermostats can drop schedules when power or Wi-Fi is unreliable.

  • Ready for an upgrade

A smart or programmable thermostat lets you set schedules and adjust the temperature from your phone.

Repair or Replacement

Thermostat Repair and Thermostat Replacement

We test first, then tell you honestly whether the thermostat is the problem and what it will take to fix.

Repair

When a repair usually makes sense

Many thermostat problems aren’t the thermostat at all. We check and fix:

  • Loose, corroded or damaged thermostat wiring
  • Settings that don’t match the system, such as a heat pump set up like a furnace
  • Power problems, including a tripped breaker or a safety switch that has shut the system off
  • A thermostat that’s simply in the wrong spot to read the room

Replacement

When replacement is the better choice

  • The screen or controls have failed
  • It reads the wrong temperature even after testing
  • It can’t control your system correctly, such as a heat pump with backup heat or a two-stage system
  • You want a smart or programmable thermostat
  • You’re replacing your heating or cooling system

A new thermostat is a small part of the bill, but it controls everything else, so it’s worth getting right.

Installation

How Thermostat Installation Works

  1. Check compatibility

We look at your system type, the number of stages, the existing wiring and whether a smart thermostat has the constant power (a C-wire) it needs.

  2. Choose and price

We explain the thermostats that work with your system and give you the price before any work begins.

  3. Install and wire

We remove the old thermostat, connect and label the wiring, and set the new one up for your exact equipment.

  4. Test and walk through

We run heating and cooling from the new thermostat, then show you the schedule and, for a smart thermostat, the app.

We install thermostats for homes in Calhoun, Rome, Dalton, Cartersville, Adairsville and across Northwest Georgia.

Choosing a Thermostat

Standard vs. Programmable vs. Smart

Each type fits a different household. Here is how they compare in general terms.

Whatever you choose, it has to match your equipment: heat pumps, two-stage systems and backup heat need a thermostat that can control them. We confirm that before you buy.

Our Approach

Is It the Thermostat or the System?

When the heat or AC won’t come on, the thermostat gets blamed first, and sometimes it is the cause. Just as often, the thermostat is doing its job and the furnace, heat pump or air conditioner isn’t answering. Replacing a good thermostat doesn’t fix that; the system needs AC repair or heating repair instead.

That’s why every visit starts with a test of the thermostat, its wiring and the system together. Every repair starts with an $89 diagnostic, waived when you choose a repair or install option, and you get a firm price before any work begins. Maintenance plan members pay no diagnostic fee and get 5% off repairs.

Heat Pumps

Heat Pumps Need the Right Thermostat

A heat pump uses a reversing valve to switch between heating and cooling, and most have backup heat strips for the coldest nights. A thermostat that isn’t set up for a heat pump can leave it stuck in one mode, or bring on the backup heat more than it needs to, which raises your power bill. When we install a thermostat on a heat pump, we set it up for that system. If yours is already struggling, see heat pump repair.

Whole-Home Comfort

When a New Thermostat Won’t Fix It

A thermostat measures the temperature in one spot. If one room is always hotter or colder than the rest of the house, the cause is usually airflow, ductwork or insulation, not the thermostat. As a BPI-certified home-energy contractor, we can measure where your home gains and loses heat. See duct cleaning and sealing, insulation and air sealing or a whole-home energy audit.

FAQ

Thermostat Repair & Installation Questions

Why is my thermostat screen blank?

Common causes are dead batteries, a tripped breaker, a loose wire or a safety switch that has shut off power to the system, such as the float switch on a clogged condensate line. If new batteries and the breaker don’t bring it back, call us and we’ll find the cause.

How do I know if my thermostat is bad?

Signs include a blank or unresponsive screen, a temperature reading that doesn’t match the room, a system that won’t turn on when the thermostat calls for it, or settings that won’t hold. The same symptoms can come from the system itself, so we test both before recommending a replacement.

Do you install smart thermostats?

Yes. We install smart and Wi-Fi thermostats, wire them for your system and set them up before we leave. Many smart thermostats need constant power from a C-wire, and we check your wiring before you choose one.

Will a smart thermostat work with my heat pump?

Many will, but it has to be set up for a heat pump so it controls the reversing valve and backup heat correctly. We confirm compatibility with your system before installing.

Should I repair or replace my thermostat?

If the problem is wiring, power or settings, a repair is usually all you need. If the screen or controls have failed, it reads the wrong temperature, or it can’t control your system properly, replacement usually makes more sense. You get the price before any work begins.

Can a bad thermostat cause short cycling?

Yes. A failing thermostat, loose wiring or a thermostat placed near a supply vent can make a system turn on and off too often. Short cycling can also come from the equipment or ductwork, so we test the whole system.

How much does a thermostat repair cost?

It depends on what we find. Every repair starts with an $89 diagnostic, waived when you choose a repair or install option, and you get a firm price before any work begins. Maintenance plan members pay no diagnostic fee and get 5% off repairs.

Should I replace my thermostat when I replace my HVAC system?

Often, yes. A new heat pump, two-stage or variable-speed system may need a thermostat that can control its stages and backup heat, and an older thermostat may not. Before the install, we check whether your current thermostat can run the new system and tell you if it needs to be replaced.

Do you install thermostats outside Calhoun?

Yes. We repair and install thermostats from our Calhoun shop and our Rome office, for homes in Calhoun, Rome, Dalton, Cartersville, Adairsville and across Northwest Georgia. Call (706) 629-0749 to confirm your address.
